Are you passionate about inspiring the next generation of working professionals who will use healthcare to make a transformative impact on our world? Do you want to talk to high school students about your career or a subject related to your career?

We are searching for a wide array of speakers who are working, teaching and changing the evolving world of healthcare.

Since 2019, our non-profit Impact Internships has introduced over 1,150 high school students to potential future opportunities in healthcare through our Health Science Immersion Program (HSIP). During the 9 week program, students explore the health science field as it relates to their education, a career and making a positive impact on our changing world. As part of the program, students hear career presentations from working professionals in fields such as dentists, surgeons, therapists and pharmacy technicians, as well as the operations of running a healthcare related business. Students will also hear academic talks delivered by college professors and graduate students, while taking part in discussion projects and a small group project. HSIP students will learn more about how their unique personal and academic interests can relate to a possible career future in healthcare and health sciences.

When / Where: 6 Hourlong Virtual Talks / Discussions through Zoom on 3 dates in 2024

HSIP is a 9 Saturday afternoon virtual program that repeats over 3 seasons throughout 2024. During each season there are two separate sessions. Each season and session has a different cohort of students. Prospective speakers are being asked to consider delivering the same presentation or discussion in both sessions over the 3 seasons.

2024 HSIP Three Season Dates:

Spring: Mar. 9th to May 4th  //  Summer: Jun. 8th to Aug. 3rd  //  Fall: Oct. 12th to Dec. 7th.

Two Sessions Each Season (6 Hourlong Talks for Speakers in 2024)

  • Session A: 11am PST to 2pm PST // Session B: 2pm PST to 5pm PST.

As a speaker you are being asked to take part in the program on 1 of the 9 Saturday afternoons per season. Within each of those Saturday afternoon dates, we will find two separate hourlong timeslots that work for you to deliver your presentation talk or panel discussion. We will reach out to all speakers several weeks before the start of each season to find the best Saturday afternoon for you to speak that specific season (ex. March 23rd, June 29th, October 26th) as well as the two hourlong time slots (ex. 12pm hour PST and 3pm hour PST) that work for you to speak. There is scheduling flexibility, however, you should only consider being a speaker if you are confident you are able to speak on at least 3 of the 9 Saturday afternoons in the set of dates for each season. This speaking opportunity will not work for speakers with busy schedules on Saturdays.

We encourage speakers from all US time zones. As part of our speaker outreach process, we are reaching out to institutions in varying states and time zones. We anticipate having speakers based in PST, MST, CST and EST. Below is a timezone chart of the speaking times.

HSIP Session: PST MST CST EST
Session A: 11am – 2pm 12pm – 3pm 1pm – 4pm  2pm – 5pm
Session B: 2pm – 5pm  3pm – 6pm 4pm – 7pm 5pm – 8pm

What is Expected: Powerpoint Presentation Talk or Panel Discussion

  • Option One (Panel Discussion): The speaker is asked to speak casually as a panelist about their healthcare career pathway and daily work experience. We hope for our students to learn more about the personal and professional journey that took you to your current point in your career as well as the unique challenges and opportunities it has created. The panel will either take place 1-1 with a staff member or have several speakers taking part. At the end of the hour, students will have the chance for a Q/A segment.
  • Option Two (Powerpoint Presentation): The speaker is asked to deliver a formal slideshow presentation about their career or a subject topic related to their career. This can include a detailed presentation about academic research, a career development journey, the evolution of a startup company, or any medical/health science related topic. At the end of the hour, students will have the chance for a Q/A segment.

Examples of Potential Speaker Talks

  • How Occupational Therapy Helps Stroke Survivors (Career Presentation)
  • Becoming a Medical Assistant (Career Discussion)
  • The World of a Pediatrics ( Panel Discussion)
  • Starting a Compounding Pharmacy (Career Presentation)
  • How Changes in Technology Can Help Medicine Advance (Research Presentation)
  • The Impact of Environmental Air Pollution on Ocular Health (Research Presentation)

General Speaking Guidelines and Tips

The students who are taking part in HSIP will be motivated high school students who may have some basic familiarity with your speaking topic. However, keeping your presentation topic simple and designed for a young audience will be very helpful for students to understand. This can include defining key terms, giving real world examples as references as well as explaining advanced concepts thoroughly. Career and research slideshow presentations are expected to last for 50 – 60 minutes followed by around 10 – 15 minutes of student Q/A.
