Helping High School Students Gain Access to Virtual Science Immersion Experiences
Impact Internships believes in the unlimited potential of education combined with purposeful career and life planning to change a young person’s life for the better. Through immersive STEM enrichment programs, our non-profit aims to introduce high school students to opportunities in science at a critical moment in their lives when it can make the greatest impact. Through hearing from real-world practitioners, engaging in interactive workshops and working alongside like-minded peers we will create a space of growth and support that builds upon but also extends beyond the traditional high school classroom. We seek to give our student program graduates greater confidence about their future college, career, and personal pathways as they embark on a period of great change in their lives. This Winter, from January 4th to March 1st, we are exploring health science, technology and engineering through 3 separate virtual immersion programs. The program webpages and applications for our 3 Winter STEM programs will be opened by Friday, November 9th.
Winter 2025 STEM Immersion Programs – 9 Saturday Afternoons (January 4th to March 1st)
Session A: 12pm to 3pm PST OR Session B: 3pm to 6pm PST
Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a doctor, nurse, or different healthcare professional? During HSIP, we explore science education, medical research and healthcare opportunities in the health sciences field. We’ll hear from health professional speakers such as a research professor, dentist and medical student. During a group research project we’ll collaborate on topics such as cancer research and neuroscience. We’ll also engage in clinical case studies, exploring topics such as asthma and diabetes. Throughout HSIP we’ll take part in career pathway workshops like the medical school road map. Throughout the program, you’ll learn how to prepare for a future career in the health sciences. Since 2019, over 1,315 high school students have taken part in the first 37 HSIP sessions. This Winter, HSIP will be an interactive way for high school students to learn more about their future opportunities in the world of science research and healthcare!
Session Time: 1pm to 4pm PST
During C-SIP, students will learn about their opportunities in computer science as it relates to education, a career and making a positive impact on our changing world. Over our 9 Saturdays, we’ll hear presentations from professionals engaged in career fields such as web design, software development and user design. In our group project, we’ll explore creative coding using p5.js, a JavaScript library that makes coding accessible through the OpenProcessing platform. Throughout C-SIP, we will explore future college and career pathways through workshops about resume building, college admissions and exploring soft skills. Since 2023, over 220 students have taken part in C-SIP during the first 9 virtual sessions of the program. This Winter, C-SIP will be a fun way for students to learn more about their future in tech and computer science!
Session Time: 2pm to 5pm PST
Utilizing a wide array of subjects and tools, Engineers have built a transformative array of products and systems. In E-IP we will learn about our future opportunities in the Engineering field as it relates to an education, a career and developing innovative products for our surrounding world. Students hear presentations from engineering professionals as we explore sectors such as bioengineering, chemical engineering or civil engineering. Students explore how different subjects such as mathematics, physics or computer science converge in Engineering. Through program workshops we will explore the education, technical training and skillsets that Engineers utilize through their careers. Students will also experience the field firsthand by working on a small group project related to engineering design. E-IP will be an engaging way for high school students to learn more about their future in STEM and Engineering!
Have you ever wondered how we know which species are endangered? How air pollution affects the lives of both humans and wildlife? Why is recycling harder than it seems? This Fall, we’ll explore these topics and many others as we consider your future opportunities in the Environmental Sciences field. We’ll hear from professionals such as an environmental engineer and an air pollution specialist. We’ll take part in a group project researching an ecological issue and brainstorming solutions. We’ll also explore topics like biodiversity, ecosystem services, pollution, and waste management in interactive workshops. We will also explore what resources colleges can offer to aspiring environmental scientists and how you can work to find research experience and internships in the field. E-SIP will be a fun way for high school students to learn more about their future opportunities in making a positive impact on the environment!
